The Thaumometer is a tool added by Thaumcraft 4. It is used to see Aura Nodes and scan blocks, items, and mobs. To scan, hold down the right-mouse button and a text message will appear at the bottom-right of the screen which will note which aspect research points have been earned. If the player attempts to scan a block or item with an aspect that has not been discovered due to one of its constituent aspects remaining undiscovered, a message will appear hinting at the missing constituent aspect. Once scanned, it will show the aspect(s) that the block/item/mob is made of. It will also display the name of the block, item, mob that it is pointing at.

This thaumometer is one of the most useful and important tools in a thaumaturgists arsenal, second only to the wand.
Firstly it allows you to scan objects, creatures or mystical phenomena and determine their magical make-up. You simply need to hold the right mouse button and wait.
Secondly it makes discovering nodes easier, as they become clearly visible if viewed through the Thaumometer's lens - even through solid objects!
