I've finally found a way to protect my dropped items from the elements: Canisters. Canisters can be crafted with any item, rendering them nearly invincible when dropped. Canistered items automatically activate when they leave my inventory.

The Item Canister is an item from Flaxbeard's Steam Power. Most items can be crafted shapelessly with the Item Canister in order to can them. Once canned, they will appear as the base item, but with an additional tooltip that states that they are canned. When thrown, they appear as mortars with the item on top. Item Canister entities are invulnerable, and will bounce in random directions if being harmed, for example when in lava, until it deems itself safe.
