Hardcore Features are a collection of changes and re-works to the base vanilla game added by Better With Mods. Essentially all the features, even the smallest, can be disabled as a group or individually in the mods config file. By default, all are enabled except HCHopper.
HCArmor[]
Gives Armor weight values that affect movement. Leather Armor has no effect, Chainmail makes you a bit slower, Iron, Diamond, Steel, and Gold all have the same, more heavy effect. More config options can be generated to allow tweaking values such as if the player can heal, jump, or sprint whilst wearing different armors.
HCBabyZombies[]
Changes Baby Zombies to be slightly slower and do less damage than adults.
HCBeacons[]
Overhauls the function of Beacons. Beacons have extended range, no longer have a GUI, and require the same material throughout the pyramid. The pyramid material determines the beacon effect, and additional tiers increase the range and strength of the effects. Some beacon types may also cause side effects to occur while a beacon is active. More config options can be generated to allow customizing the range of different beacons or disabling them. This feature also re-works Ender Chests. On their own, they now work like normal Chests. When placed on a Beacon made of Ender Blocks they gain special functions depending on the beacon level.
With a few exceptions, Beacons follow these tier rules:
Tier | Size | Total Blocks | Range (Radius) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | (3x3) | 9 | 20 blocks |
2 | (5x5) | 34 | 40 blocks |
3 | (7x7) | 83 | 80 blocks |
4 | (9x9) | 164 | 160 blocks |
Base Block | Effect |
---|---|
Glass | No effect, cosmetic only. |
Concrete | No effect, cosmetic only. |
Terracotta | No effect, cosmetic only. |
Iron | Gives all hostiles in range Glowing for 30 seconds every 3 minutes |
Emerald | All mob deaths are under the effect of Looting. |
Lapis | All players in range have True Sight. |
Diamond | All players in range have Fortune. |
Glowstone | All players in range have Night Vision. |
Gold | All players in range have Haste. |
Slime | All players in range have Jump Boost. |
Hellfire | All players in range have Fire Protection. Upon activating, the Beacon will light all the Hellfire base blocks on Fire. |
Prismarine | All players in range have Water Breathing. |
Dung | All players in range have Nausea and Poison unless wearing full Plate armor. |
Coal | All players in range have Blindness unless wearing full Plate armor. |
Padding | All players in range have Slow Falling. |
The colors of the Beacon beams will reflect the colors of the base blocks.
Special Beacons[]
The Soulforged Steel Beacon allows the Player to set their spawn by right-clicking it with an empty hand.
Tier | Radius |
---|---|
1 | 40 blocks |
2 | 80 blocks |
3 | The Overworld |
4 | Interdimensional |
The Ender Block Beacon makes Ender Chests placed on specific levels of the Beacon have different inventories.
Tier | Access |
---|---|
1 | Shared Inventory in that dimension |
2 | Another Shared Inventory in that dimension |
3 | Globally Shared Inventory |
4 | Private Player Inventory |
HCBeds[]
Disables the ability to sleep in a Bed and can no longer set spawn with them. Though there is still a config option to keep the set spawnpoint feature that is disabled by default.
HCBoating[]
Makes Boats much slower than Vanilla. The Player can hold a Wind Sail or Banner to go faster. This feature also changes the recipes for Vanilla Boats as can be seen on their page.
HCBonemeal[]
Removes the ability to insta-grow crops with Bone Meal, but it can still be used on farmland to create Fertile Farmland and increase crops growth speed. This feature also disabled Bone Meals crafting recipe, so it has to be made in a Mill Stone.
HCBrewing[]
Modifies and rebalances vanilla brewing recipes and makes Potions stack up to 8, including modded Potions. The stack size is configurable. This feature removes recipes for Swiftness and Leaping Potions, as well as removing Redstone and Glowstone from Witch drops. It also allows using any fish for brewing Water Breathing Potions.
This table shows some of the items that are replaced by HCBrewing as brewing components.
Vanilla | Replacement |
---|---|
Glistering Melon | Mysterious Gland |
Redstone | Witch Wart |
Glowstone | Brimstone |
Fermented Spider Eye | Poison Sac |
Gunpowder | Creeper Oyster |
HCBuckets[]
Makes it so Water Buckets cannot move an entire source block, making Water a more valuable resource. Water Buckets will work normally in The End by default to make Enderman Farms easier to create.
HCBuoy[]
Adds values for Better With Mods items to the Hardcore Buoyance mod.
HCChickens[]
Reworks Chicken breeding. Chickens don't breed in pairs. You feed a single Chicken 1 Seed, and it craps out an egg that can be thrown. The egg then either makes a Chicken, or drops Raw Egg.
HCCobblestone[]
Makes stone variants drop into their respective cobblestone variants, see:
HCCooking[]
Changes the recipes for baked goods to require the Kiln and changes soups to require the Cauldron. See:
HCDeadweight[]
Disables the vanilla Anvil completely. Partially replaced with the Infernal Enchanter, but it lacks features such as repairing or renaming items.
HCDiamond[]
Makes it so Diamonds have to be made into an ingot alloy to be used in all the Diamond tools and armor recipes.
HCEnchanting[]
Adds Arcane Scroll drops to specific mobs, used for enchanting with the Infernal Enchanter. Also disables the Mending enchantment, and makes it so Soulforged Steel tools can only be enchanted with the Infernal Enchanter. Other things can be configured such as the Arcane Scroll drop chance or Looting bonus. If you re-enable Mending, it will drop from Shulkers.
HCEndermen[]
Makes Endermen aggro in groups and make a thunder noise when they teleport.
HCFighting[]
Disables knockback when no weapon is used.
HCFishing[]
Changes Fishing Rods recipe and reworks it to require bait and a large enough Water source exposed to the sky. Any item can be configured to be bait but the defaults are:
Fishing must occur in open waters, underground won't work. The hook must be placed on a Water block with line of sight to the sky. Additionally the water must be at least 3 blocks deep for fish to live in it. Certain conditions will affect the chance of getting a bite:
- Night time will decrease chances
- Rain will increase chances
- Dawn and Dusk will increase chances
- Full moons will increase chances.
HCFurnace[]
Overrides the Vanilla Furnace to make some changes such as varying cook times and tweaking fuel values. The Furnace now consumes fuel in it's inventory even when idle. See the config file for a customizable list of changes to items such as certain log types smelting more items or Iron Ore taking 8x longer to smelt than default. This feature also removes the Furnace recycling recipes of tools and armor.
HCGloom[]
Makes the dark dangerous.
HCGunpowder[]
Disables the Gunpowder drop and replaces it with
Niter, a raw material which is used to craft Gunpowder.
HCHardness[]
Makes certain block hardness more "realistic". Also makes Pickaxes and Axes effective at breaking more blocks.
HCHopper[]
Completely disables the abilities of the Vanilla Hopper to transfer items.
HCHunting[]
Makes Mobs hunt other animals too. Zombies attack herd animals, Spiders eat Chickens and Rabbits, Wolves will eat anything. Spiders will also shoot webs at targets.
HCInfo[]
Sets the gamerule reducedDebugInfo to true by default "for a more authentic experience". This removes information from the F3 screen such as the coordinates and biome.
HCInjury[]
Applies heavily configurable penalties or debuffs to lower Player health levels.
HCJumping[]
Removes the ability to place blocks whilst in the air. This prevents the Player 'pillaring up' to build or escape attacks.
HCLumber[]
Makes punching Wood return 2 Planks, 1 Bark, and 2 Sawdust instead of a Log. To get a Log an Axe must be used. The Log can then be crafted with an Axe to produce 3 Planks, 1 Bark, and 2 Sawdust.
HCMelon[]
Makes Melons have gravity, making for new automation abilities. Blocks that fall for more than 3-4 blocks will break into Melon Seeds.
HCMobEquipment[]
Changes the equipment that mobs spawn with. The following mobs are affected: Husks, Skeletons, Wither Skeletons, Zombies, Zombie Pigmen, and Zombie Villagers.
HCMovement[]
Change walking speed depending on the block. Also makes Dirt Paths require a shovel greater than stone to be created.
HCNames[]
Disables Player Name Tags.
HCNetherBrick[]
Removes the Vanilla recipe for smelting Netherrack into Nether Brick.
HCOres[]
Ores only smelt into a single Nugget, making it much harder to create large amounts of metal. Also makes Dusts (anything with oredict starting dust.) smelt into Nuggets. Additionally, this feature changes the recipes of Compasses, Clocks, Buckets, and Flint and Steels to better fit the nugget smelting. It also adds some recycling recipes for some items created with Iron nuggets to melt back into nuggets in the Crucible. Note that these recipes will revert to ingots if nugget smelting is disabled.
HCPiles[]
Makes soils drop 75% (3/4 items) of their content if not broken with a shovel to incentivize their use. Soils include Grass, Dirt, and all their variants, in addition to Sand, Red Sand, Gravel, and Clay.
HCRedstone[]
Changes the recipes for Redstone devices to be more complex. A config option allows you to enable or disable making Stone Buttons and Pressure Plates require Cut Stone, which must be done in the Soulforged Steel Anvil. The following items and blocks have had their recipes changed:
Wooden Button
Wooden Pressure Plate
Stone Button
Stone Pressure Plate
Weighted Pressure Plate (Light)
Weighted Pressure Plate (Heavy)
Lever
Tripwire Hook - Uncraftable
Redstone Repeater
Redstone Comparator
Piston
Observer
Dispenser
Dropper
Iron Door
Iron Trapdoor
HCSapling[]
Saplings now grow like crops in 7 stages until becoming a full grown Sapling that can grow into a tree. Saplings placed by a
Block Dispenser will be already fully grown.
HCSaw[]
Changes the recipes for complex wooden blocks to require the Saw. Fences are made with Mouldings, Gates with Mouldings and Sidings. Doors, Trapdoors and Boats with Sidings. Additionally,
Signs,
Item Frames, and
Note Blocks get custom recipes.
HCSeeds[]
Hemp Seeds can only be obtained by tilling the ground with a Hoe. Wheat Seeds will still be dropped from normal Grass (Configurable). This feature also stops Zombies from dropping Potatoes and Carrots.
HCSheep[]
Sheep can mutate, shearing them resets their Wool color to their natural color, breeding them can produce all colors. Chance by default for a sheep to mutate is 1 in 500.
HCSpawn[]
This feature reworks how death works. On initially joining a world the player spawns at the World Spawn, but any proceeding deaths the player will spawn randomly within a 2000 block radius of the World Spawn. In the event of frequent deaths one will continue to spawn at the previous position. The feature is intended to give a larger impact on death, as well as require players to develop infrastructure throughout their world in order to find their main base. With HCBeacons enabled, a Soulforged Steel Beacon can be built to allow the player to set their spawn at the Beacon.
HCStrata[]
Divides the underground into 3 Strata. Each Strata requires the next tool tier to properly mine. High Strata is just normal Stone which can be mined with any pick from build height to Y 42. Medium Strata can only be mined with Iron Pickaxes or better from Y 42 to Y 21. Low Strata can only be mined with Diamond or better from Y 21 to Y 0. Ores through the Stratas can be mined by the same level pickaxes as Vanilla, regardless of the Strata they are in. This is to encourage caving to get Diamonds and other ores.
The ConnectedTexturesMod can be used to visualise the Stratas:
HCStructures[]
Makes it so Structures are looted within a 2000 block radius of spawn. It also makes unlooted structures the only source of
Enchanting Tables and
Brewing Stands by removing their crafting recipes to encourage exploration.
HCStumping[]
The bottom block of trees are now 'Stumps' which cannot be removed by hand and take much longer to break even with Axes, thus making your mark on the world more obvious. If the ConnectedTexturesMod is installed Stumps will have visible markers. A
Stump Remover can be right-clicked on Stumps to instantly break them.
HCTools[]
Overhauls the durability of tools to be more rewarding when reaching the next level. The only obtainable Wooden tools are Wooden Shovels (only for crafting Boats) with 10 durability, and Wooden Pickaxes that break after one use. Swords and Hoes are also disabled until Iron, and the Axe can be made at Stone.
HCTorches[]
Changes the Torch recipe to only provide 1 from each Coal. This makes
Nethercoal more useful, as it converts 1 Coal into 4 Nethercoal.
HCVillages[]
Villages close to spawn are 'abandoned' and gradually gain more resources the further out you go until 3000 blocks away at which Villages are now normal. Villages from 2000 to 3000 blocks away are semi-abandoned. By default this feature also disables non-player created Iron Golem spawns.
There is also a config option to remove 'useful' blocks from Villages including Ladders, Stairs, Tables.
