FlaggedRevs Temp Workaround

As you all should be aware by now, FlaggedRevs is causing a large amount of issues with regards to not being able to review pages in the Module namespace. This in turn causes non-logged in users to see script errors on all articles; essentially making the site unusable. Although we are trying our best to fix this issue, we have yet to find a solution.

This brings me to my crude idea of a hot-fix which involves allowing anonymous users see the latest version of all pages rather than just the latest reviewed edit (stable page). This is by no means a permanent fix; rather a temporary fix, as this means that any vandalism or spam on the wiki will be visible to all readers until removed by an editor. I realise this is a big task, as we will be required to step up our game in regards to removing such content from the wiki; however with the fairly-well reliable PonyButt IRC log and with editors across several timezones all with incredibly weird sleeping patterns (as Paladin so kindly put it), we should be able to keep up. --Wolfman_123_ · FTB Wiki Staff 02:41, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

As a result of actions by Retep998, Cblair91, and Game widow, as of 6 hours ago (and as noted at the end of the Discussion section), FlaggedRevs is no longer active on this wiki. Script Errors should no longer be present on articles as a result of it. PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 02:18, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

  1. Yes checkSupport. I honestly believe that it is better for readers of the wiki to potentially see a small amount of vandalism rather than not be able to use it entirely. Modules cannot be reviewed, so when you are not logged in you always view the stable version of a page, which means the Modules are not up to date and therefore are broken. Either the FlaggedRevs extension would have to be fixed so Modules can be reviewed properly, or it would have to be removed. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 07:19, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

G? Phasing Out

The move from the old grid style to the new (and current) tilesheet system was a great thing, but in order to keep backwards-compatibility, {{G?}} was made to convert anything like |ore=Iron Ore into {{G|Iron Ore}}. The move was a really long time ago, and {{G}} itself really is inferior to {{Gc}} or {{O}}, meaning we're looking to phase out using {{G?}}, and try and avoid using {{G}} when you can achieve the same thing more efficiently using {{Gc}} or {{O}} and |link= and more importantly |mod=. With mods ever overlapping of names, it makes pages look much nicer if the grid icons work when the wiki knows which tilesheet to get the image from (which with {{G}}, it doesn't and can only guess, meaning it fails when there's overlapping of names). This is still in an early phase, so information may and probably will change from this. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 21:10, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Looking at Articles dependent on G?, there are slightly more pages than we expected. A few thousand more. Don't worry though, there's a doom counter to know what percent of the wiki currently needs fixing before {{G?}} can be deleted safely (ignoring template modifications to stop using it):
It's gone, it's literally all gone!
And in case you need a more visual representation:

0% (0/29494)
0% (0/29494)

Chocohead NagEditsStaff 01:30, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

0% of articles on the wiki are using {{G?}}

Crafting grid style overhaul

The crafting grid style overhaul would make standard style GUIs follow this style. Non-standard templates will not follow this, such as Template:Cg/Arcane Worktable and Template:Cg/Essence Refiner will not be affected. Example template: Template:X9. Alternate style: Template:X1. I also have to admit that having no grid borders in the Shapeless crafting grid is growing on me; and thus I'm open to this change. However I do agree with Chocohead and PaladinAHOne in that although page economy is great and the thin border looks quite good, there's something slightly off in not having a Minecraft style border. Due to this fact I believe we should use the alternative "Thicker boarder" featured on User:Retep998/Sandbox/Cg. Wolfman_123_Wiki Staff · (Talk) 07:41, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

His edits always follow the guidelines, and have excellent grammar. He says he is up for the job of dealing with other user's edits when they do not follow the guidelines, and he has proven that he already does do this. Implementation of new |Shapeless parameter in the Crafting Table template

Chocohead has created a more understandable and all-around better version of our current |shapeless parameter at Template:X8. It adds the word "Shapeless" above the arrow in the table if |shapeless=True. Some tweaks could be made, such as allowing for |shapeless=trueedit: this has been implemented, and making it use the MC fontedit: it does this too, but apart from that it seems pretty alright. -- SatanicSantaTalkContribsAdmin 02:06, 19 August 2014 (BST)

User has not shown enough of an understanding of what articles should generally look like and consist of. During the trial, the user's pages had to be frequently checked upon to make sure they were correct, and most of them needed some minor tweaks to be up to the wiki team's standards. If the user consistently edits in the future, and works his quality up a bit, he may join the team. But, as of right now, the verdict is that the user will not be joining the team.

Translator Nomination

Luxim appears to show high understanding of how the translation system works, and seems to understand English and French very well. I have checked his/her translation of Help:Links using Google Translate, and it is mostly correct (there are a few slip ups that are probably due to either Google Translate or English -> French difficulties within the languages). Luxim is extremely active, and has been since a couple of weeks ago. For these reasons, I am nominating Luxim to be an official French translator on the FTB Wiki Translation Team. -- SatanicSantaAdminEditor 16:33, 23 May 2014 (BST)

Motion to allow new users upload images

Since images are a huge part of the wiki, I suggest allowing new users to upload images. --

17:26, 11 January 2014 (GMT)

Discussion

Hi, I am a new user. I cannot vote, but I can give my opinion. Since I became part of the wiki, I have needed to upload images sometimes. For me, getting the images uploaded, was not a big problem. It took 1/2 a week and could easily find the place where to put them. Of course, it would be easier if I could upload them myself, but in the way it is done right now, there is a strict regulation on the naming, so it won't quickly become a mess and uploading offending or wrong images is impossible because someone is checking everything. --Newnottakenname (talk) 12:51, 12 January 2014 (GMT)

The only regulations are that block images be prefixed with Block, image icons be sent to retep, tilesheets be prefixed with Tilesheet, and crafting grid tank overlays be prefixed with Tank. I wouldn't count that as strict. :P -- 13:43, 12 January 2014 (GMT)
Well actually, nobody should even care about what tilesheets are prefixed as since they can't import a tilesheet without a butt anyway. But the Block and Tank rules? Totally strict. Even I didn't know those rules :D PonyButt (talk) 23:17, 12 January 2014 (GMT)
Strict my butt. Stop using your bot to make normal edits like this. -- 02:28, 22 January 2014 (GMT)

So, since this has happened, the majority of uploads by new users have been what should be included in tilesheets. I think it needs to be more obvious that users do not upload texture files. Maybe we could have a big fat warning at the top of Special:Upload that says something like "If this file would be used in a Navbox, imageicon parameter, or any crafting grid template, do not upload it. Instead, send it in a zip file named the same as the mod to Retep998. -- SatanicSantaSysOp•talk 08:41, 7 March 2014 (GMT)

I suppose that can be arranged. -- 13:19, 7 March 2014 (GMT)

Succubism on the FTB Forums has created detailed and informative guides on various mods, she is also recommended by various members of the FTB Team. Although she has yet to create an account on the wiki, I believe, judging by her works on the forum, that she would be able to follow the wiki formatting and content guidelines just fine. Final stage of the crafting grid overhaul project

Before I begin recreating crafting grids and populating the ore dict, please decide whether you want to use the new system.

Benefits of the new system

  • Ore dictionary
  • Simpler invocation of tanks.
  • Simplified crafting grid template creation.
  • Infinite animation frames.
  • Variables in tooltips.
  • Full implementation of grid functionality.
  • Automatically resolve file names and links of items with mod variants in grids.

Downsides of the new system

  • Slightly more typing when implementing crafting grids in articles.
  • Cannot animate the ore dictionary and normal animations at the same time.

Comparisons

Note that some names of templates are not final and may change in the future.

Grids

Grids are much the same except that animation using a list is no longer supported, Instead you use a wrapper to active the animation.

Code Result
Old
{{Grid|Ice,Dirt,TNT}}
Template:Grid
New
{{N|begin}}{{G|Ice}}{{G|Dirt}}{{G|TNT}}{{N|end}}

The grid template now automatically resolves of mod counterparts of items. Observe where the grid links to and what the tooltip displays.

Code Result
Old
{{Grid|Iron Gear (BC)}}
Template:Grid
New
{{G|Iron Gear|mod=BuildCraft}}
or
{{G|Iron Gear|mod=BC}}

Variables are now also supported inside grids and tanks.

Code Result
Cells
{{G|Iron Gear|10|mod=BC|title=$2 $1s from $3.}}

10
Tanks
{{G/T|lava|2500|10000|title=$2 out of $3mB of $1.}}
Liquid Lava
GUI tank 120

All other old parameters are still supported.

Tanks

Before you have to type out a string of complicated code that I wouldn't even try to type to create a tank, now you only have to type out the type of liquid, the amount of liquid used, and the maximum amount of liquid. Also, in the old template, due to the way the it is implemented, it was impossible to generate a tooltip for tanks, now, a tooltip is generated automatically and does support variables like grids do. Another perk is to not need to capitalize the first letter of the liquid name.

Code Result
Old
asfjhalskufhakjsdhflaksuhefkajshflkuehsdf
asfjhalskufhakjsdhflaksuhefkajshflkuehsdf
New
{{G/T|water|8000|10000}}
Liquid Water
GUI tank 120

Ore dictionary

An ore dictionary has now been implemented. To call it you use:

{{G|Oak Wood Planks}}{{G|Copper Ore}}

produces:

Note that you call the ore dictionary directly with the normal grid template, set no-oredict to 1 if you do not want to use the ore dictionary:

{{G|Oak Wood Planks|no-oredict=1}}

produces:
You also can call the grid display logic to achieve the same effect, the Template:Gc offers an shortcut to Template:Grid/Cell.

{{Gc|Oak Wood Planks}}

produces:
You can also call the ore dict by supplying the ore dictionary with a tag name. A wrapper is created to achieve this effect:

{{O|plankWood}}

produces:

Crafting Grids

Creating crafting grids is now easier than ever. Compare the code of Template:Grid/Carpenter with Template:Cg/Carpenter.

Animation and slides

Animation and slide wrappers are created and can be used in lots of situations. They both cycle through divs and spans.

{{N|begin}}<span>A</span><span>B</span><span>C</span><span>D</span>{{N|end}}

produces:

ABCD
{{N|begin|slide=1}}<span>A</span><span>B</span><span>C</span><span>D</span>{{N|end}}

produces:

Implementation of crafting grids in articles

Crafting grids previously automatically cycle through items, now it does not, instead the user would have to click on buttons to flip through pages. Some stuff you normally will have to type to create tanks can be omitted here since it is included in the crafting grid template.

  • And the IC2 bottling plant?
  • And the solid canner?
  • And the block cutting machine? The block cutting machine doesn't have the warning triangle if it has a blade in, so looks like this, and so would probably be better for templates.

By GUI images, does it include the animation image it uses to show progress or just the GUI image in general? If it's the latter, shouldn't the uploaded file do the trick?
The 5 small circles arranged in a "+" pattern inside a big circle are the Essence Refiner's input slots where the player may insert the appropriate item (or any items/blocks in general). The small circle found outside the big circle is where the Refiner outputs the essences. There's a rectangular slot on top of the big circle but it's meant to be used as a way to lock the Refiner via Runes combinations (The uploaded file had it edited out) -- SoraZodiatalk 14:31, 18 August 2014 (BST)

I've got another request so I can finish Advanced Solars. Can I get the molecular transformer GUI? Here's a link to the GUI, and a screenshot of an example, so you can see what it looks like. The top slot is for input, the bottom for output, and the box on the right is for the info (EU needed, progress, needed item names etc). I'm not sure if you'd rather use the NEI one opposed to the actual GUI, since the actual GUI has irrelevant/changeable things like progress and time taken while the NEI one makes more sense for the EU needed. ;) Chocohead NagEditsStaff 21:17, 25 August 2014 (BST)

Non-Language Links

The Problem

There are two types of links at the moment;

{{L|Link|o=Overwrite}}

Which links to wiki.feed-the-beast.com/Link*/language* - if you're on a language page, it links to the link, but in said language - , and shows up like Overwrite.

[[Link|Overwrite]]

Which links to wiki.feed-the-beast.com/Link, and shows up like Overwrite.

Why is this a problem?

Old pages still use the (inferior) [[]] system. People who translate such pages, forget to add */language* at the end of the links, and it just makes a giant mess out of translated pages.
Any page with {{L|}} links is translated faster (because links won't need edits other than maybe overwrites).

Solution

Bot-edit all pages with old links.

Notes

  • Bot-editing those pages would mean that all [[category:*category*]] links would become {{L|category:*category*}} links, which would create separated language categories. Might wanna filter those out.

Discussion

  • What are you suggesting? {{L}} on every page? That would be a no. And the notes part, having separate categories for translated articles is intended, but currently using {{L}} to create such links is currently broken, I'll have to fix it later. -- Jinbobo = Wiki Team Lead = 04:04, 10 August 2013 (BST)
    • The categories in {{L|Category:*category*}} are working fine for me, I believe there's no problems in changing all links, really. --Alistaire (talk) 15:39, 10 August 2013 (BST)
    • Training 5 people is easier than training 50 people. If we changed all links to {{L}}, normal editors will start forgetting to add them and will become more of a pain in the ass. If you see a translator not converting links, post a warning linking to the translating guide asking them to do so. -- Jinbobo = Wiki Team Lead = 16:45, 10 August 2013 (BST)

Mod item naming convention

Currently the naming convention are the following:

  • <Item name> [(<Mod abbv: (F|TE|IC2|BC)>)] for files.
  • <Item name> [(<Full mod name>)] for articles.

Problem

The current problem with this setup is that in some situation that items from different mods act differently, items in crafting grids will point to the article with the exact same name. For example: A grid icon will point to: Tin Gear (TE), but that actual Tin Gear articles is at Tin Gear (Thermal Expansion). An additional redirect must be created in order reach the correct article.

Solution A (AgentTadpole)

Unify the naming and use the file naming convention on articles.

<Please insert reason here>

Solution B (Jinbobo)

Unify the naming and use the article naming convention on files.

Titles should be descriptive, if there articles for forestry, buildcraft and thermal expansion and a user searches for the item. All three article will show up in the result, considering these differences aren't significant enough to have disambiguation pages created, if the article title has the full mod name instead of a abbreviation in it, it would be easier to identify and navigate to the article the user is looking for.

Solution C

Use the current conventions and create redirects from to the correct articles.

Tooltip formatting

Because I am feeling so generous I have provided another alias to {{Tooltip color}} in the form of {{§}}. In addition it now supports more Minecraft formatting codes such as l m n and o for extra formatting goodness. For some reason using ''Text'' in crafting grid tooltips appears to break things so using {{§|o|Text}} works perfectly. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 04:33, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks to Kythyria we now have an even fancier template {{TTF}} which parses § formatting codes inline in the text and inserts the appropriate markup. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 22:40, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Resource page tooltips

I hereby decree that in the infobox for resource pages, each icon must add the mod name to their tooltip using my fancy new Resource Icon template.

For example instead of

{{Gc|Copper Ore|mod=IC2}}

we do

{{RI|Copper Ore|IC2}}

which looks like this:

Copper has been reformatted to use this new style as a demonstration.

🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰

I have a complaint. Shouldn't |imageicon have {{O|ingotCopper}} so that it will cycle through all the copper, rather than just GregTech's horrific coloured one? Chocohead NagEditsStaff 13:51, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Overhaul RI Template

As good as {{RI}} is, it is still at heart a {{Gc}}, but meaning many parameters that Gc has aren't being used, but are still slowing the wiki having to check them. User:Chocohead/Sandbox/Template:RI fixes this, by stripping it out so it only uses what it uses from the Gc template. There are two different versions depending on how invalid mod abbreviations are entered, the documentation on the template page explains that difference. IMO, this'll make a good template better (by making it more efficient and neat). Chocohead NagEditsStaff 01:32, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
