What this section is for[]

THIS SECTION IS ABOUT THE OFFICIAL WIKI ONLY, NOT FTBWIKI.ORG.

Now that that's out of the way (avoiding confusion, as a couple of people have mistaken the threads in the Wiki Creation section to be about the unofficial wiki).

Basically, this section is for easily contacting any member of the wiki team without the need of a wiki account, hunting us down on reddit, or joining IRC. This is also for any suggestions, and (shocking I know) feedback for the wiki.

You can find us on the #FTB-Wiki IRC channel on Esper as well.

As far as I know, no progress has been made on the logo itself. The process for rebranding the wiki is still happening, mostly thanks to @xbony2 working on various articles and portals for various modpack launchers like Technic and ATL.

We do not have a Discord, however we do have a Slack channel on the Gamepedia Slack server (http://www.gamepedia.com/slackinvite) #ftb, as well as an IRC channel #FTB-Wiki on EsperNet.

Impossible to find server creation instructions on website; Wiki was wildly unhelpful.[]

Created an account to post this.

When looking simply for somewhere to download the necessary files to host a server on my personal machine, why have I had to jump through so many dang hoops? I've been looking for the past 30 minutes just for a dang download link.

And I look on the wiki, and I literally see this: Useless server instructions

10/10, very helpful.

So after more googling I finally found the link, and I figured I'd try to make it easier for the next person and update the wiki.

Updating useless server instructions

Nope.

Someone please update the freaking wiki to make it easier for the next guy.
The correct link is <snip, this is the wrong place>

And please consider posting a download button on the main page of the website. I had to freaking dive into the rabbit hole to wonderland just to figure out where to download the dang server.

You do realize that the "+ 1 more" button is not intuitively obvious. I too went down the same path that the OP did. In fact I have gone down it two or three times this last year or two. Please make the server files more visible.

EODCrafter, But FTBLauncher is being deprecated and some of us our wanting to learn how to download our server files through the new Forge-sponsored methods before FTBLauncher goes away. Also it is not clear from the FTBLauncher what version of a modpack's server files are actually going to be downloaded. For example the server files for DW20's 1.10.2 modpack shows that FTBPresentsDirewolf20110Server.Zip is going to be downloaded. This is the same filename as the version I downloaded 2 weeks ago. It isn't until after this download has completed and you take a very close look inside can you tell that it is actually the 1.1.4 version. Whereas after clicking on the "+ 1 more" entry for this modpack it is very clear that you are going to be downloading the 1.1.4 version. That alone is more than enough incentive for me to use the server downloads available on feed-the-beast.com--once I find it anyway.

We (FTB) have made our feelings on the visibility of the server downloads known, making the process easier from within Curse is one of the features that needs to be in place before we retire our launcher.

Thaumcraft - and mods with multiple versions[]

It is my sense that Thaumcraft and its myriad versions is getting away from us. In no small part because each new version requires a complete new set of pages, even though, in a lot of cases, the item / block / mechanic being documented is largely unchanged.

I am trying to add my own contributions, but they largely track my "interest of the moment" so tend to bounce around between versions of mods (and mods) a lot.

The thaumcraft nav-boxes are already monstrosities so I am not sure what I want to suggest... but as a somewhat casual contributor I would like some way to write a page once that applies to thaumcraft 4 and 5 ...
GreenZombie, Oct 31 2016
As far as I know, the only way to do this effectively would be to copypaste the article for one mod to the one for the other and change the mod names and abbreviations. You could also simply put a message on the page's talk page and request someone else do it if you don't feel like it. I'm having the same struggle right now with Flaxbeard's Steam Power vs. Esteemed Innovation, where at least half the articles will, at this point, be nearly identical. This is something I'd like to address, but aside from copypasting and making weird page templates I can't think of a decent solution.

Mods Directory[]

I really enjoy the FTB wiki and see it as a valuable resource but one thing I can never get by is the Mods/Minor Mods directory. It is incredibly annoying to mouse over the selection and have a huge list come up. So I propose the ability to click on each section and go to a page with the list. This will become extremely more useful with the ever growing list of mods Major and Minor.

Thank You,

Crisis of the staff system[]

Hello everyone.

The FTB Wiki started as a non-publicly-editable project served by specially appointed users which together form the FTB Wiki staff. The wiki faced the problem of low activity, and one of the staff members, Jinbobo, proposed to make the project publicly editable. The proposal was accepted, but the problem where practically no new “regular” users do anything and everything is did by the leading group remained. Jin proposed that the staff system is the problem — the very existence of it may cause thoughts of viewers or newcomers like “They have staff, why should I ever bother working on this?” — and proposed to remove it. (ref 1) The full list of problems told by Jinbobo is as follows (he points out that the first two are the main ones):

  • Establishment hegemony: The same people occupy important positions for too long and no fresh ideas are injected.
  • New editor mentality: They have staff, why should I bother contributing. (this is a wiki after all)
  • Overwhelming: There are too many ranks to climb. The ladder is hard to navigate.
  • Intimidating: Everyone editing has X rank, what if I make a mistake? Do those people with rank Y override my opinion?
  • Time commitment: It appears that the purpose of editing the wiki is climb up the ranks, and I don't have the time for this.
  • Undervalued contributions: This person has rank X and I have rank Y, does that make his contribution more important or valuable?
  • Fixation on prestige: He got rank X and has Y edits. Does that mean I need Y edits to obtain that rank? (edit counts are counterproductive! By all means include it on your user page, it is a metric of your impact on the wiki indeed. But putting it on page level 2 (one click from the main page) might not be the wisest idea. I realize this now and I regret including that on the staff page.)
  • Improper motivation: User X join the wiki with the specific intention to get to rank Y for bragging rights. However, User X does not fully understand the workings of the wiki resulting in low quality contributions.
  • Sense of divide: The most visible people here all have rank X, but I have rank Y, does that mean I am unwelcome here?
Jinbobo on ref 1, section Addendum

Meanwhile I, the former Russian translator, questioned the requirement of the staff system and independently proposed to remove it. (ref 2) These events have begun the epoch which I call “the crisis of the staff system” and paved ground for a new group overhaul proposal by Retep998, which poses as an alternative to the system. (ref 3)

All these events may have a big effect on the FTB Wiki and the FTB community, so I have to open the discussion here, on the FTB Forum. Anyone is free to give feedback and to vote on the proposal.

Do you mean the icons in crafting grids and such like in this image? If so, that likely won't happen since rebuilding all the crafting grid stuff to be able to use different sized icons will take a ridiculous amount of work.

Peter crafting grid example

Or do you mean the image in the infobox on the right? If so, it is mostly just a matter of someone dumping higher resolution images, uploading them, and setting the {{{image}}} parameter of {{Infobox}} appropriately.

hey reptep

Whoah what is that receipe haha nice.

Anyway, I mean the image in the infobox on the right. I might be interested in dumping higher resolution. Would we be able to start by copying the image from the official minecraft wikipedia: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki? Should we decide on a specific dimension and file size?
Jungalist81, Jun 25 2016
I like the my example grass block wikipedia article. It has both a zoomed version of the block plus the original small image below it.
Jungalist81, Jun 25 2016
That recipe is from https://ftb.gamepedia.com/Circuit_Wiring_(Copper)

There's no need to copy images from the minecraft wiki. The way we currently dump images for the wiki using NEI lets us easily dump them in higher resolutions if need be. I'll talk with other staff to see if we can decide on a standard size for them and way to do it. I'm thinking 128x128 is probably a good size.

Yes, if we do start adding the larger image, it won't replace the existing smaller images. The Infobox is already capable of doing what we need, so it's just a matter of standardizing and getting people to start doing it.

https://ftb.gamepedia.com/Sifting_Table Something like this would be better suited by a bot than a human, since it is just mindlessly uploading images and doing the same tiny edit to hundreds or thousands of pages. So I'd probably recommend finding some other way to help the wiki. There are a lot of mods that are missing huge amounts of documentation, perhaps you could write some articles for them.

Different updates on mods?[]

Jungalist81, Jun 17 2016

IC2 experimental is just an iteration of IC2, it's not really a whole new mod. I mean, they didn't even change their major version. Which is why IndustrialCraft 2 and IndustrialCraft 2 Experimental are both the same mod on the wiki. IndustrialCraft 2 Classic however is an entirely separate mod that is taking its own direction, and as such it should be documented as a separate mod, despite it having the same origin as IndustrialCraft 2.

Wiki design feedback[]

I started playing MC again; the last time I played was when FTB Ultimate came out! I am now heavily dependent on reading MC wikis and watching youtube tutorials. I came across this article https://ftb.gamepedia.com/Feed_The_Beast_Wiki:200k_Editathon as there is a need for wiki participants so i thought i'd give it a try.

To start, I wanted to share my feedback on this wiki. I was wondering if anyone is interested in wiki design change? Below are photoshop examples. My designs are inspired from the unofficial wiki site http://ftbwiki.org/Feed_The_Beast_Wiki.

Official FTB Wiki: Wiki design feedback base

Photoshop Example 1 Wiki design feedback example 1 In example 1, the page is now a consistent dark template using the same gray and black shade. The top header is much smaller and the left panel has been moved to the right. This way, MC info is immediately located in the top-left. The navplate on the bottom doesn't display language choices, intead we can put that in the front page. Navplate is now 1 less click to more info. Personally, i'd like to have the navplate fully expanded in each article but i know it can get a bit cluttered on big mods. A good compromise is to have the page load the sub-categories as shown above.

Photoshop Example 2 Wiki design feedback example 2 Example 2 is another dark template with the left panel intact. Instead of a top header that looks like a useless toolbar, I threw it in a blast furnace and added the FTB logo on the top left.

What do you guys think? Shoutout to @xbony2
Jungalist81, Jun 14 2016
The wiki already has a dark theme, if you were curious. I'm not sure if you knew about that or not. You can turn it on here. We aren't going to turn it on per default though, since the style should try to match the style of other FTB sites (this forum, the official website, etc) and also I can easily imagine people bothering us for "copying" the unofficial wiki, because we all know they were the first wiki ever to use a dark theme :p

Language choice isn't something that can be simply be moved to the main page, since different pages support different languages, and some pages support no languages, and the main page contains only links to mod pages, which may or may have translated navboxes. It's also possible (and common) the main mod page might not be translated, but some of the blocks and items might be. Also this makes it difficult for me to find translated pages and maintain them as need be.

I don't like the open navbox thing of the unofficial wiki. It's not really one less click, since the collapsible groups should already be open. It doesn't allow one to view the entire navbox without a bunch of clicking, and sometimes where one item/link may be isn't always obvious. I don't want users to have to search for it.

Having the sidebar on the right feels strange. If you don't like it though, I think making it collapsable would be cool, so people could focus on a page and not need to look at the other junk.

I like the shorter header of WOWpedia (your 2nd example). Adopting that would be good.

(and ping @SatanicSanta @retep998 @Chocohead , the most likely people to have something to say).
xbony2, Jun 14 2016
@xbony2 I get notified when anyone does anything in this section.

Agree with xbony on the navboxes. Furthermore, it wouldn't work for the navboxes that are lazy loaded like Witchery.

I do agree the panel should e collapsed. Often it goes longer than the article itself. I don't particularly like on the right side, except in rtl languages like Arabic.

I agree that the big header at the top with the edit button and stuff should be a bit shorter.
SataincSanta, Jun 14 2016
Thanks for the reply guys

"I don't like the open navbox thing of the unofficial wiki. It's not really one less click, since the collapsible groups should already be open. I'm glad u said that, When navigating through learning the mods and their blocks and items, to me it's more convenient to just have everything displayed. When learning about mods, I almost always press the expand button several times and just look at the big list of blocks of items Since I'm not familiar where an item is categorized.

"Language can't be moved to main page"

How about separating the language choice links and put them above the nav? If the language choice is for each specific article, why have it guard the nav?

"There's a dark theme"

Oh okay cool I didn't know that, I will just switch to dark theme

" I don't want to follow ftbwiki.org"

Ignore that then, I shouldn't have said that. How about this: my request is inspired by the wow gamepedia and the Habbo gamepedia you showed me earlier. Wow gamepedia is a nice dark theme and Habbo gamepedia doesn't have lots of admin/page tool links in each article.

"I don't like right panel"

Hahaha me too! I over assumed you guys would get mad if I removed it. I like the idea of default collapsing the left panel. Finally, I'm glad you agree with the top header being a bit too big. Consider this, if u have a really high resolution monitor its not a big deal but it's still feels like big empty space up top on lower resolution.
Jungalist81, Jun 14 2016

Jungalist81

Most wikis that have the same translation extension we use actually put their language bars at the top of the page, but I think this is a bit too distracting since most users don't care that much about translations.

I don't really have a problem with stealing ideas from the unofficial wiki (the "Templates" editing toolbar is proof of that), I just think for the dark theme it would probable we'd get shit for it.

Oh, and don't worry about getting us mad, I'm only allowed to get mad at other staff members :p

Modpack Overview on Mobile[]

I opened the 1.7.10 pack list on my phone to check something and discovered that I can't see over half the listing. It has the grid shifted off the standard white background, making it extremely difficult to read the text. Discovered this on an HTC One M8 running the latest Firefox.

Edit: I just realized how massive that picture is when not viewing on mobile. Tossed it into a spoiler.

Question about Grid Images[]

So, I've noticed that on the Gamepedia wiki you have to upload a tilesheet of all the items and blocks in a mod along with their names to a moderator. I want to ask why is this a thing. Is it optimized better/easier to maintain? Do you not want regular users to be able to edit grid files for some reason?

It was a result of our navboxes that went at the bottom of all pages. The GregTech navbox had grown so large that it crashed the wiki when someone edited it, and the wiki went slow when someone loaded it (it took over 20 seconds to load for the client too).

I think Retep and Jinbobo convened to create the tilesheet system, which a fair amount of sites in general use to lower server load and client load times. At that point, I believe Retep was the tilesheet manager, you'd send things to him to get them added. There were staff tools which he used to add icons to the tilesheets, but I don't know how easy they were to use or how much they automated things (I never used them; they scared me).

@retep998 do you still have anything to do with this?
Nerixel, May 7 2015
The tilesheet system was implemented because loading one large image was significantly faster than waiting for hundreds of individual images to load, never mind how long it takes for a page to build when it references hundreds of different files. It also meant we wouldn't have to upload tens of thousands of individual images to the wiki, or keep track of which mod each grid image was from. The result, while having a higher barrier of entry to setup the tilesheets, results in a convenient system of templates, and scales a lot better. @Nerixel I'm still the only one with software to automate the process of creating and updating tilesheets, and all requests for tilesheets still go through me. Anyone with staff rights is able to modify the tilesheets though, and staff often will fix typos in the naming of tiles.
retep998, May 7 2015
I need to work on my own tilesheet software, it's going to be way cooler then Retep's version :3

OK, that kinda makes sense. Thanks for the fast answers! I just thought that this procedure was kinda pointless and long, but now that I know about it I can start doing stuff and things on the wiki.

Yes. Something happened yesterday and no one really knows what. Nana is the only one who has server access, so we have to go through him to restart it, and uh, lets just say he had a pretty good night and wasn't really capable of restarting it.

Just pinged Nana about it. Hopefully he's not AFK right now.

EDIT: It appears that Nana is indeed afk. I have tweeted to Paul and Luke of CreeperHost, and Creeperhost itself.

One of the extensions that Jin wrote a while ago has derpy code. I'm going to assume this is the tilesheet extension, since doing heavy tilesheet work crashes it also.
SatanicSanta, Oct 11 2014
The tilesheet would make sense, since I've crashed the wiki before just by adding 3 crafting grids the lazy way (just names without the {{G|).

The bad gateways and stuff were because of the cache server, I thought.

As for the wiki being slow, sure, perhaps Apache would help with that. Trials should be done or something. Sure glad I'm not on the wiki team anymore :p

The problem is not nginx, the problem is the mediawiki software itself is configured incorrectly and has poorly written extensions. Those problems will be fixed by the transition to Gamepedia because the Curse folks know how to configure mediawiki correctly and are fixing the problems with the extensions.

Seems fine to me. I get timeouts sometimes though when going to RioV I's page, probably because of the very large Navbox.
xbony2, Dec 6 2014
I made an improvement to the tilesheet extension that removes the fallback to Grid files (which we've migrated away from a long time ago anyway). With that change I am able to load the RioV navbox locally significantly faster.
It'll go live on Monday probably, which should fix those timeouts.

Difference between Revisions Viewing[]

Alright, so I started playing around with the new wiki to see what's different, and the first thing I found (other than scroll lag), was that the difference between revisions option leads to a window that is extremely difficult to read. For example: Horrible diff theme
