Ethereal Essence is an item added by Thaumcraft 4. It can be obtained by breaking Aura Nodes and killing Ethereal Guardians and Wisps. If Thaumaturgical Knowledge is installed right-clicking on any Infused Stone will convert it into Imbued Stone and drop Ethereal Essence of that primal aspect. It is one of the the only sources of
essentia. Once any one essence is scanned all the others will be considered scanned, including aspects that have not been discovered in Ethereal Essence form yet.
