The Barrel is one of the most basic but most useful blocks in Ex Nihilo. It can be used to process a wide range of biological materials into Dirt, to collect Water from rain, or to perform certain combinations of fluids and items.
Recipe[]
Usage[]
The Barrel can be used to hold liquids or to convert blocks and items into other blocks and items.
Items and fluids may be imported to and exported from a Barrel by any item or fluid transport system (Hoppers, Itemducts, Transfer Nodes, etc.). Items must be input from the top, fluids must be input from the sides, and all outputs must be taken from the bottom.
Liquids[]
Right-clicking on a Barrel with a liquid container will transfer the liquid to the Barrel. A Barrel can hold 1,000 mB.
Lava can be placed in a Barrel, but the Barrel will "burn" and transform into a Lava source block after 20 seconds. Removing the Lava — with a Bucket, by processing an item with it, etc. — will prevent the "burning", so all Lava processing operations can be performed with a wooden Barrel if initiated before the Barrel burns. A Stone Barrel can hold Lava indefinitely.
If an empty Barrel can see the sky and it starts to rain, water will start to collect in the Barrel. It takes 125 seconds of rain to fully fill a Barrel with one Bucket of Water (1,000 mB).
Processing[]
Right-clicking on a Barrel with an item can transform the Barrel's contents into another item (consuming the right-clicked item in the process). Transformed items can be removed by right-clicking the Barrel (with an empty Bucket for liquids).

- ↑ Initiating the summoning of a Blaze will prevent a wooden Barrel from "burning" even though the summoning time is greater than a Barrel's burn time.
- ↑ If the Slimeballs are not collected within another 50 seconds, the Barrel will spawn a Slime (losing its contents). The spawned Slime can be of any natural size and thus may ultimately yield more Slimeballs.
- ↑ A Water-filled Barrel will also transform into Witch Water if placed near Mycelium (again taking 50 seconds) and will cause Mushrooms to grow on the Mycelium.
In addition to the transformations above, there are two unique methods of transforming blocks:
Cobblestone to
Moss Stone
Stone Bricks to
Mossy Stone Bricks- A Water-filled (or partially filled) Barrel can randomly transform nearby Cobblestone and Stone Bricks blocks to Moss Stone and Mossy Stone Bricks respectively. Blocks to be transformed must be in a 4-high 5x5 square centered on the Barrel (two blocks above to one block below the Barrel), and must have another opaque block somewhere above them (i.e., they cannot have sky light 15 directly above them). 100 mB Water is removed from the Barrel for each block transformed.
Lava to
Obsidian- Placing Water above a Lava-filled Barrel, or filling a Barrel with Lava while Water is already above it, will instantly transform the Barrel's contents to Obsidian (without consuming the Water). Right-clicking the Barrel will remove the Obsidian.
Composting[]
A Barrel can be used to transform "compostable" items into Dirt. Right-click on a Barrel to add a compostable item. Each added item contributes some percentage to filling the Barrel (see Compostable Items table below). Once added, items cannot be removed. When the Barrel is full (added items equal or exceed 100%), its contents will transform in 50 seconds to Dirt which can be removed by right-clicking. Excess items are not carried over to the next operation.
