The Automated Crossbow is an item and entity added by Thaumcraft 5. Right-clicking with it in the hand will place it.
Right-clicking it will open its GUI, where Arrows can be put in (including Thaumcraft Arrows). The Automated Crossbow will automatically fire at hostile mobs, with a range of 25 blocks.
An upward Dispenser will automatically put more Arrows into the Automated Crossbow. Right-clicking the Automated Crossbow with a Wand will drop it.

You have found a way to give a crossbow a mind of its own turning it into a simple automated turret.
When placed in the world it will automatically fire at any hostile mobs it detects within range. Unfortunately its limited mind does not allow you to fine tune its targets.
It has a very limited internal inventory, but if you wish you can place it over an upward facing dispenser which will allow it to automatically reload itself from that inventory.
Clicking on it with a wand will pick it up.
