Welcome! In this guide, we will be creating a small Atomic Science Fusion Reactor. This guide assumes you have a version of Thermal Expansion installed alongside Atomic Science. This reactor produces approximately 50,000 Redstone Flux per tick.

Fusion Reactors are a safe renewable way to generate energy mid-to-late game. They are appealing because they do not actively consume fuel, unlike Big Reactors reactors.

Prerequisites[]

  • 1x Chemical Extractor
  • 1x Fusion Reactor (block)
  • 44x Electric Turbine
  • 44x Water Bucket (reusing the same bucket is fine)
  • 24x of any decorative block.
  • A way to obtain liquid water and a way to transport that water to the Chemical Extractor.[note 1][note 2]
  • A way to move Deuterium from the Chemical Extractor into the Fusion Reactor block.[note 1]
  • 52 Electromagnets.[note 3]
  • A way to transport energy from the Electric Turbines to your other machines. [note 4]
  • An initial power generation method, to kickstart the reactor. This is not required after the reactor has been turned on.

Deuterium production[]

The first step in creating a reactor is setting up Deuterium production.

Chemical Extractor setup

A basic deuterium-production system, using Atomic Science's Chemical Extractor. The Aqueous Accumulator (leftmost machine) generates Water, which travels through Fluiducts to the Chemical Extractor. The Chemical Extractor, powered by an off-screen power source connected via Redstone Conduits, creates Deuterium and sends it off-screen through another row of Fluiducts.

Set up your Aqueous Accumulator, placing it down next to a water source. Connect it to the Chemical Extractor with a Fluiduct[note 1]. Connect your Chemical Extractor to a power supply (you can connect it directly to the reactor after it has been turned on.)

Electromagnets and the Fusion Reactor block[]

The Fusion Reactor block is the core of the Fusion Reactor; it is responsible for plasma generation.

Clear a 9x9x5 area, and place a Fluiduct on the ground[note 1] and the Fusion Reactor block immediately above it. Surround its sides with Electromagnets[note 3], leaving the top empty.

Place Electromagnets[note 3] on the ground diagonal to the first Electromagnets. Connect the fluiduct under the Fusion Reactor block to your deuterium-production setup, digging into the ground where necessary. Add a third circle of Electromagnets diagonal to the lowest layer. Do not place the corners of this layer.

Fusion Reactor electromagnet placement (missing top)

The placement of Electromagnets, sans the top layer.

Place the final layer of Electromagnets two blocks over the lowest layer, leaving air inside of the Electromagnet "tube."

Fusion Reactor electromagnet placement (with top)

The complete placement of Electromagnets.

Water and Electric Turbines[]

Create a ring of decorative blocks parallel to the top layer of electromagnets, leaving a gap between the top layer and the decorative block except for the corners, which should be directly parallel to the corners of the top Electromagnet layer. Fill the space between the top electromagnet layer and the decorative blocks with water.

Place a Redstone Conduit on top of the Fusion Reactor block. Fill the remaining 3x3 area with water.

Fusion Reactor water placement (without upper layer of water)

The placement of water and decorative blocks, minus the final layer of water.

Place Electric Turbines over the water blocks, using temporary blocks (like Dirt) as necessary.

Fusion Reactor turbine and water placement (minus upper turbines)

The placement of turbines and the final layer of water.

Finally, place one last layer of Electric Turbines over the newest layer of water.

Conduits/Tesseracts and turning the reactor on[]

Add two Redstone Conduits above the Redstone Conduit placed in the beginning.

Begin placing your Redstone Conduits and/or Tesseracts on top of the turbines.

Once complete, connect the Turbine cabling to your Chemical Extractor and to the conduits above the Fusion Reactor block. This ensures that the reactor is truly renewable.

Once you have finished every step above, turn on the reactor by adding power to Fusion Reactor block. Assuming your Chemical Extractor is also powered, the reactor should turn itself on and begin producing power.

Congratulations, you have created an Atomic Science Fusion Reactor. The subsequent sections provide supplemental instructions for turning off the reactor and expanding it.

Fusion Reactor complete

A complete Fusion Reactor. A singular Tesseract is sufficient for this small reactor, but I went overkill.

Safely turning off the reactor[]

The reactor cannot be carelessly dismantled without the risk of serious damage to your base. The reactor contains Plasma, which consumes blocks upon contact with them. The Electromagnets prevent the plasma from leaking out of the reactor. As such, remove the Electromagnets last.

Disconnect the Chemical Extractor and the Fusion Reactor block's power source, along with the block itself. Wait until all of the reactor's turbines have turned off to give the reactor a chance to expend all of its Plasma. Afterwards, it is now safe to destroy the reactor. If you see any plasma (purple swirling block) while destroying Electromagnets, enclose it immediately with an Electromagnet.

Principles[]

The Fusion Reactor generates Plasma from Deuterium and energy. Plasma can be moved over by one block using adjacent Electromagnets.

Electromagnets conduct heat and create Steam if a water block is placed adjacent to it.

Turbines[note 5] collect steam generated by the water and Electromagnets.

You can use these principles to create fusion reactors of any size. Be safe and have fun!

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Thermal Expansion's Fluiducts are the recommended way to transport fluids.
  2. Thermal Expansion's Aqueous Accumulator is the recommended way to collect water.
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Electromagnet Glass will also work, but is not recommended unless you wish to see inside of the reactor. Atomic Electromagnets will not work, as they are for another multiblock structure.
  4. Thermal Expansion's Redstone Energy Conduits or Tesseracts are the recommended way to transport large amounts of energy.
  5. Steam Funnels can also collect steam, allowing for steam to be transported across large distances.
